The Leura School Canteen provides a seasonal and limited, but healthy menu consisting of a variety of hot foods, sandwiches and snacks. Our food options align with the Healthy School Canteens Strategy released in 2017 by the NSW Department of Education.
Our Canteen service is run by dedicated P&C Members and volunteers, with all profits going back to the P&C and ultimately back to the school. If you are able to volunteer your time, please see the section below on Volunteering with the Canteen.
The Canteen is only open on Fridays at lunch and recess.
Orders for Canteen lunches are only accepted online through Spriggy - sign up here. Paper bag orders will not be accepted unless you are using a volunteer voucher and/or have contacted the Canteen to organise alternative arrangements. We are very understanding, so if you cannot order online for any reason, please email us at [email protected].
Volunteering with the Canteen
As the Leura School Canteen is run by volunteers, we are always on the look out for helping hands! Anyone is welcome to help - mums, dads, aunts, uncles, grandmas, grandpas - whoever!
There are a number of different tasks that you can volunteer for. You'll meet new people and make great friends within our school community. You can feel satisfied and proud that you have helped your school. You'll have lots of fun and laughs. And of course, your children love seeing you helping at school! All volunteers will receive a $5 voucher to be used on your child's/ren next Canteen order.
We understand that there are work and family commitments that might impede your volunteering time, or mean that you cannot physically be at the school (no children can be in the Canteen when food is being prepared). However, there are a few tasks that can be performed in the comfort of your own home. Read on to see which task/s would suit you best.
The tasks that we need volunteers for include:
Coordinating Volunteer Rosters - requires 2-3 hours effort every week. This task can easily be performed all in the comfort of your own home! It involves collecting details from volunteers for various tasks (Friday canteen service, shopping, muffin baking etc.), creating and maintaining rosters, and ensuring that volunteers are notified of when they have been rostered (both at roster completion and beginning of rostered week). Volunteers are sent a reminder through email or SMS, although we do find that the latter works more effectively! This task is suitable for one volunteer, however it could be shared between two volunteers if necessary.
Collating of orders and minor food prep - requires 1 hour effort every Thursday morning. This task includes affixing labels to paper lunch bags, sorting all the orders into specific categories (eg. hot food, sandwiches etc.), stocktaking of ingredients and snack items, and some minor food prep (such as making jelly, taking out frozen ingredients etc.). This task is suitable for any number of volunteers! We can create a roster if we have enough volunteers. Well behaved little ones can be accommodated if necessary.
Shopping - requires 1-2 hours effort every Thursday morning. The shopping list is drawn up once the counting and collating of orders has been finalised. You will then be given the list to go and buy the necessary items, returning them to the Canteen when finished. This task is suitable for any number of volunteers. We usually run on a roster depending on how often volunteers are able to perform this task.
Baking - requires 1-2 hours effort during rostered week. This task involves making and donating small baked goods for sale at the Canteen. We require about 50 - 70 servings and generally prefer fruit filled muffins - no chocolate, lollies or nuts. Baking are dropped off to the Canteen on Thursday or Friday mornings. Last year we had a great team of bakers who were only required to bake once or twice a term. This task is suitable for any number of volunteers.
Friday Canteen Service - requires 3 hours of effort from 9.30am-12.30pm. This task involves (but not limited to) preparing sandwiches, making up a fruit salad, preparing hot foods, packing lunch bags, counter service at lunchtime, and help with cleaning up. This task is suitable for any number of volunteers. We usually run off a roster depending on frequency of commitment. You can commit to every Friday, every second or third Friday, or even just once a term. The choice is yours!
Join the planning team - we meet approximately twice a term to decide on the menu and other organisational details. You can have a say in what is provided in the canteen. We welcome anyone, especially if you have new ideas or suggestions!
Register your interested for any of the above roles by sending an email to [email protected] and we'll be in contact as soon as possible. Thank you in advance for volunteering to help make the Canteen a great service for our children!
